March 11th is celebrated by Marines worldwide as "Happy 0311 Day," a day that honors the Infantryman, or "grunt," the backbone of the Marine Corps. The number 0311 refers to the military occupational specialty (MOS) code for infantry, the oldest and most revered of all military specialties.

The history of the infantry in the United States Marine Corps dates back to the American Revolution when Marines were used as a landing force and as naval gunners aboard ships. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Marine Corps continued to evolve and expand by establishing Marine Barracks in various locations worldwide.

The Marine Corps saw significant action during World War I, where they participated in some of the war's bloodiest battles, including Belleau Wood and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. In World War II, the Marine Corps fought on numerous Pacific islands, such as Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. During the Korean War, the Marines fought valiantly in battles such as Inchon and Chosin Reservoir.

Throughout the years, the Marine Corps infantry has proven to be a formidable fighting force. The Infantryman has become known for his toughness, endurance, and bravery in facing danger. Marines who serve as infantrymen undergo some of the most rigorous and demanding training in the military, including the Basic Infantryman Course and the School of Infantry.

The Marine Corps infantry has also earned a reputation for being "salty" and "hardcore." The term "salty" refers to a Marine who has been in the service for a long time and has a wealth of experience and knowledge. A "hardcore" Marine is tough, resilient, and never gives up, even in adversity.

March 11th was chosen as the day to honor the Marine Corps infantry because it is the anniversary of the birth of the United States Marine Corps Reserve. On March 11th, 1916, the U.S. Congress authorized the establishment of the Marine Corps Reserve, which would play a vital role in defense of the United States during World War I and continue to serve to this day.

To all Marines who have served as infantrymen, Happy 0311 Day. Your sacrifice, dedication, and bravery have helped make the Marine Corps today's elite fighting force. Semper Fidelis.
